Fertility Treatments for Gay Couples

As a result of advancements in assisted reproductive technology (ART), same-sex couples have various options for building their family. Prior to the genetic screening, diagnostic testing, and monitoring of the overall health of intended parents, it is advisable for them to discuss their family planning with their doctor. Following the obligatory testing procedures, our fertility team will work with our patients to develop the most appropriate treatment regimen that aligns with individual needs and preferences.

Treatment Options For Same-Sex Female Couples

In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) with Donor Sperm

This type of fertility treatment involves using donor sperm to fertilise a woman's egg in a laboratory, and thus provides a suitable option for female same-sex couples. After the couple decides which of them receive the IVF treatment, the chosen female partner undergoes cycle preparation by receiving hormone therapy. Afterwards, the mature eggs will be retrieved from the ovaries and stored in an incubator. Additionally, the donor sperm is prepared and concentrated to increase the probability of fertilisation. Following the egg retrieval and sperm preparation, the sperm is injected into the egg for fertilisation, ultimately resulting in embryos. The embryos are cultured in the laboratory for 3-5 days for development and growth before they get transferred back into the woman's uterus through a thin catheter.

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) with Donor Sperm

This fertility treatment can help same-sex female couples achieve their dream of starting a family. The procedure involved injecting a single sperm (in this case donor sperm) directly into an egg in a laboratory. Typically, the process starts with ovarian stimulation where hormone therapy is used to increase the number of produced eggs. As the eggs mature, they are retrieved from the ovaries and fertilised in the laboratory with ICSI using donor sperm that meets strict quality and screening criteria. As with the IVF treatment, the fertilised eggs are cultured for 3-5 days before being carefully transferred back into the female partner's uterus.

Fertility Treatments For Same-Sex Male Couples

In-Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) with a Gestational Carrier

This type of treatment is an excellent option for male couples dreaming of becoming parents. After choosing an egg donor, the selected female will receive hormone therapy. As a result of the hormone therapy, the ovaries are stimulated to produce multiple eggs. Subsequently, a fertility specialist retrieves the eggs once they reach maturity. Theoretically, you only need one egg for fertilisation, meaning that excess eggs can be frozen for future use. Once thawed, the embryologist will use the father's sperm to fertilise the donated eggs. The embryologist will monitor the eggs' fertilisation and transfer any resulting embryos into the gestational carrier's uterus.

Surrogacy

Gay male couples have the opportunity to achieve parenthood through surrogacy; a process that involves entrusting a surrogate mother to carry their child to term. Importantly, there are two main types of surrogacy: traditional and gestational:

  • Traditional surrogacy: involves the surrogate mother providing both the egg and womb for the pregnancy.
  • Gestational surrogacy: involves the surrogate mother providing only the womb, while a separate donor egg is fertilised with the intended parents' sperm.

At Ovoria Egg Donor Bank, our patients can select between anonymous and non-anonymous egg donors. All our egg donors have been selected and screened following Ovoria quality requirements and operational procedures. In alignment with the international ART associations guidelines, we examine donors in accordance with the EU-Tissue Directive 2004/23/CE, 2006/17/EC.

What is The Difference Between an Anonymous Egg Donor and an Open ID Egg Donor?

anonymous egg donor and open id egg donor

Choosing between anonymous and open ID egg donors can be challenging for recipients. The main difference between unknown and known egg donors is the amount of personal information disclosed to the intended parents. In the case of choosing an anonymous egg donor, the recipients do not have access to the personal information or photos of the potential donors. In the case of choosing an open ID donor, the recipients can learn personal information such as:

  • full name
  • location (country, city and address)
  • email address
  • phone number
  • photos in childhood
  • adult photos

It is important to note that in the case of open ID donors, the child of the parents can decide whether to contact the donor or not. However, if the choice falls upon an anonymous donor, the child will not be able to contact the biological mother.
